General Services Organization
Services Organization is one of the constituent units of the Department of
Atomic Energy, Government of India, and was setup in the year 1979. General
Services Organization, is headed by
Dr. S.A.V. Satya Murty, Director,
GSO, Distinguished Scientist and is also Director, IGCAR. GSO takes care of the
common facilities such as Housing, Medical, Transport, Water Supply, Civil and
Electrical maintenance in the Atomic Energy Townships at Kalpakkam and Anupuram.
The Atomic Energy Township, Kalpakkam, built for the employees working in Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research(IGCAR), Madras Atomic Power Station, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre Facilities, General Services Organization etc., is situated 80 Kms. south of Chennai on the coast of Bay of Bengal. About 26,000 residents hailing from all parts of India reside here and are provided with all amenities viz. schools, hospital, shopping complex and swimming pool etc.
The activities of GSO are shared by various Groups depending on the functional requirement and expertise. The Civil Engineering Division takes care of the construction and maintenance of the residential quarters for the employees and office buildings. There are about 4,920 quarters in Kalpakkam. In the new Anupuram Township situated about 10 Kms away from Kalpakkam, 658 quarters are completed and occupied and construction of additional 168 quarters are under progress. Civil Engineering Group is also responsible for the continuous potable water supply to the townships. It's other major activities include laying & maintenance of roads, sewage treatment and horticulture. The site of Kalpakkam township, once a barren land is now full of greenery.
The Engineering Services Group (Electrical) is responsible for the planning, designing and implementation of all the electrical and Air conditioning projects and works in the Townships. It provides and maintains uninterrupted power supply to all the quarters and buildings. The electrical supply is provided through Ten sub- stations commissioned at various locations of the townships. It is also responsible for the operation and maintenance of the electronic Telephone Exchange and for providing communication facilities.
The Hospital situated at the centre of the Kalpakkam township provides medical services to about 26,000 beneficiaries. It has twenty nine Medical Officers, two dental surgeons, three visiting physicians and a number of paramedical and supporting staff. All the employees of DAE units situated at Kalpakkam, and their dependents are covered under Contributory Health Services Scheme. The Hospital has an operation theatre, male ward, female ward, labs, pharmacy, x-ray and scanning facilities, treadmill and other specialized equipments. The Hospital serves about 800 out patients daily. In addition a dispensary operates at Anupuram for the benefit of its residents.
Autoshop is taking care of complete maintenance and repairs of all departmental vehicles and equipments pertaining to General services Organization (GSO), Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre Facilities (BARCF) and Madras Regional Purchase Unit (MRPU). The total no of Light and Heavy Vehicles is 84. The total number of heavy equipments is 14, which includes cranes, mobile cranes, tractor-trailers and forklifts etc.
General Services Organization (GSO) attends to liaison works with District administration for supply of water and amenities to the Township viz. laying / repairing of approach / highway roads etc.
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) looks after security of the office buildings located in the Township and also projects at plant site. The security of the Township is well taken care by Tamil Nadu Ex-Serviceman Corporation (TEXCO) and also by full-fledged police station of the State Government.
All the activities of GSO are supported by Administration and Accounts who also look after Personnel Management, Estate Management, Recruitment, Transportation etc.
