Safety Group
Safety Group consists of Radiological Safety Division (RSD), Safety Engineering Division (SED) and Environmental & Industrial Safety Section (E&ISS). The major activities of Safety Group are related to radiological and engineering safety in fast reactor systems and the related fuel cycle facilities. Information resource services and library are also under the purview of Safety Group.
Radiological monitoring and health physics program of all the radioactive facilities in IGCAR is provided by RSD. RSD has four sections, namely Radioactivity Transport & Analysis Section (RTAS), Radiation Safety Section (RSS), Radiological Impact Assessment Section (RIAS) and Radiation Dosimetry Section (RADOS). Physics, chemistry and biological aspects of radiation safety are studied. Health physics activities, environmental impact studies with special reference to atmospheric dispersion coupled to real time met-data, radiation and radioactivity transport studies, biodosimetry, thermo luminescence studies, development of facilities such as intense pulsed neutron source, aerosol transport facility, Compton spectrometer, radon lab. and detector development are some of the major activities of RSD. RSD is also committed to creating public awareness on radiation safety and organizes lectures on radiation safety for the general public, school and college children, and employees of the facilities at Kalpakkam.
SED has two sections namely Sodium Safety Studies Section (SSSS) and Reactor Safety Studies Section (RSSS). Experiments on the sodium fire suppression and studies on sodium fire propagation are being carried out. Studies on core catcher, core melt relocation, flow blockage in subassembly are some of the activities of this Division.
Experimental & Industrial safety aspects of the entire center is under the purview of this Environmental & Industrial Safety Section (E&ISS). This Section also organizes frequent training programmes on industrial safety for the members of all the facilities in the Centre.
