Baldev Raj elected as IIW VP, first Indian to occupy post

Chennai:   Eminent Scientist and Director of Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) Dr Baldev Raj has been elected as Vice-President of International Institute of Welding (IIW) for the term 2009-12.

Dr Baldev Raj was elected by the Board of Directors of IIW at its Annual Assembly held at Singapore on July 17, an official release said here today.

It is a great honour for India that Dr Baldev Raj would be the first Indian to serve in the position in the long history of International Institute of Welding for more than 60 years.

Dr Baldev Raj is the first Indian who was elected on the Board of Directors three years back and now has elected as the Vice-President of the Board.

''This is a unique honour to India and welding science and technology community of the world. This speaks about ever increasing eminence of manufacturing capacity and potential of India.

Dr Baldev Raj also represents Indian Institute of Welding in the International body'', the release added.

This position would also enable him to build bridges between International Institute of Welding and Indian fraternity of welding science and technology.

Dr Baldev Raj would work with International Institute of Welding to enhance emphasis on human resources, introduction of new materials and technologies for enhanced performance, safety and innovations to make a difference to the society, the release added.
