Opportunities to the Student Community

Major Facilities Available

IGCAR houses two operating research reactors viz; the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) and the Kalpakkam Mini Reactor (KAMINI). The FBTR uses a plutonium-uranium mixed carbide fuel to produce 40MW of thermal power and 13.2MW of electrical power. It provides the irradiation facilities for studies on materials and fuels and is also the testing ground for various FBR components.
The KAMINI reactor is a Uranium-233(irradiated thorium) fueled reactor used for the thermal neutron flux for research activities in physics and chemistry, including neutron activation analysis and the irradiation of samples for experimental and forensic purposes. The reactor is also routinely used for neutron radiography of various components and materials. Facilities such as the accelerator and structural mechanics laboratory, sodium complex, accelerators, simulators etc.; have provided research training for a large number of students.

Project Work at IGCAR

Post graduate in Science and Engineering from various educational institutes are being provided opportunity to carry out the project work which is part of their curriculum, with the experts in IGCAR, thereby giving them exposure to the activities of the Department and also inspiring them to take up challenging R&D assignments both at DAE and other premier R&D organizations.

Visit to IGCAR

IGCAR has always been encouraging the young and talented students to visit various facilities / laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and machineries to understand the path-breaking discoveries made in the frontier areas of engineering/scientific research and cutting-edge technologies.

Guidelines for doing Project Work at IGCAR

Eligibility

Students in Post Graduate Programme only
Students from any Institution are eligible and accommodation will be provided based on availability on chargeable basis at the prevailing rates
Only Indian Nationals are permitted

Duration of the Project Work

Project work for longer duration typically for one semester duration (3 to 8 months) are encouraged. Short term projects and In-plant Training are not permitted.

Procedure

Post Graduate Students have to submit a project request addressed to dirsec@igcar.gov.in / shure@igcar.gov.in
The received requests will be circulated to all Senior colleagues of the Centre for getting the approval for carrying out the project work and identifying the suitable guide
Based on the inputs received from the Senior Colleagues, the requests are processed further after the approval of Director
Only limited accommodation is available and after ascertaining the availability of the accommodation, necessary forms will be forwarded to the students along with the approval letter via email
In case of wards of DAE employee, the parent should submit a formal request letter with the approval of the guide identified by them
It is mandatory for the students to submit a report of the work carried out during the period of their stay at IGCAR

Procedure for getting entry permit from CISF

After submitting all the above documents, Director will approve the proposal and give approval letter
The students have to meet the Administrative Officer along with temporary entry permit (two numbers), Undertaking form and the covering letter given by Director
The student has to collect the two entry permit forms from the Administration and submit the same along with Security Clearance form, Police verification form, Xerox copy of the ID card and the covering letter addressed to Commandant, CISF at Main Gate
Student has to collect the entry permit, duly signed by Commandant, at the Main Gate after signing in the register kept at Main Gate
Student has to submit a copy of the covering letter at Transport Section at Kalpakkam Township to get bus pass on payment basis
One copy of the covering letter is to be handed over to Estate officer, GSO for getting accommodation
One copy of the covering letter is to be handed over to the Guide

Visits to Facilities at IGCAR

Our Centre is dedicated to the development of robust fast reactor technology and associated closed fuel cycle technologies based on intense science based multi-disciplinary research. The Centre has comprehensive R&D facilities covering the entire spectrum of FBR technology related to Sodium Technology, Reactor Engineering, Reactor Physics, Metallurgy and Materials Science, Chemistry of Fuels, Coolant and other Nuclear Materials, Fuel Reprocessing, Reactor Safety, Control and Instrumentation, Computer Applications. Some of the major and unique facilities include, Fast Breeder Test Reactor, KAMINI experimental reactor, Sodium Technology facilities, Structural Mechanics Laboratory, Accelerator, Simulator etc.
We do facilitate the visit of young and talented students to our institution, equipped with the state-of-the-art equipments and facilities to give them exposure to the multi-disciplinary R&D being pursued to master the difficult technology of Fast Reactors and associated Fuel Cycle Technologies. Final year post-graduate students in Science and Undergraduate in engineering, in disciplines of relevance to our programmes will benefit by visiting our Centre.

Eligibility Criteria

Visit is permitted for thirty students (Pre-Final / Final Year Graduates in Engineering Discipline or First / Second Year Post Graduates in Engineering / Science Disciplines) along with two faculty members
Only Indian Nationals are permitted for the visit
Visit is permitted only once in an academic year for an institution

The filled in form with the signature and seal from the institution along with formal request from the head of the institution seeking visit has to be forwarded to dirsec@igcar.gov.in for processing the request

Visit Schedule

The visits are generally permitted only on Fridays (falling on working day of IGCAR)
Intimation of the date of visit, based on availability (first come first serve basis), will be conveyed to the institution in advance. The students along with faculty should ensure reaching the MAIN GATE of DAE complex at least by about 9.00 AM on the allotted day

Documents to be submitted

On receipt of the confirmation mail, the institution has to send the list showing the details of students (name, gender, year of study, discipline, contact number, photo), faculty members (name, designation, contact number, photo) as annexure along with undertaking form Download Undertaking Form with seal and signature from Head of Institution in the Institutional letterhead along with copies of the RC book, insurance certificate, road tax paid receipt, driving license of the driver for enabling entry permit
The driver should have valid driving license and the bus should be insured
Originals of RC book, driving license, Insurance Certificate and Road tax paid receipt should be produced at the time of entry at main gate to CISF Personnel on demand
Valid ID proof is required for the students, faculties and the driver

Mandatory Instructions to be Observed

Cell phones, cameras, transistors, USB, laptop, earphones and other electronic gadgets and equipments are strictly prohibited
The vehicle should not be fitted with electronic equipment such as video, audio systems
The Centre will not provide any transport facility for the visit
The Centre will not be responsible for any injury or disability sustained by the visitors during the visit
Visitors will have to abide by the security regulations of the Centre. The escorting staff from the college should ensure the movement of the students to the designated location only
Lunch will be arranged on payment basis on request. A written/email communication from institution in this regard to be submitted once visit is confirmed
Once the visit commences the schedule given should be adhered to and any change or curtailing of the visit is not permitted

(IGCAR reserves the right to summarily cancel any visit at any stage without attributing any reason whatsoever)
