Theme | The shielding of neutron is a challenging task due to the nature of its interaction with matter. It can travel large distances through most materials without being scattered or absorbed. Concrete is of the most widely used shielding material in nuclear reactor. Radiation shielding concrete can be used to attenuate both neutron and gamma rays. High density concretes are largely used for shielding against ionizing radiation in nuclear installations, medical units or wherever radiation protection is needed. The shielding ability of concrete can be improved using cement based composite materials. |
Scope of the Study |
The study deals with development of neutron shielding material using borate and Gd2O3 nanoparticles.
Following are the objectives of the study:
|
Expected Expertise | Academic / Research Institutes with experience and expertise in new shielding material development towards shielding of gamma and neutron. |

Collaborative Study : Development of Indian Standard Phantoms (Knee and Skull) for in-vivo monitoring
Please send an E-mail to: vidya@igcar.gov.in | Closing Date : 24.05.2024 |
Theme | In the case of undesirable radiation exposure, Internal exposure can be estimated by in-vivo monitoring and usually requires realistic calibration phantoms. Presently, available phantoms are of international standard and do not represent the Indian population, which results in dose estimation errors. Additionally, the unavailability of radionuclide-incorporated phantoms necessitates the development of Indian standard phantoms (ISP). ISP (Knee and skull) are required for bone surface-seeking radionuclides (Eu, Am, Pu) estimation and are fabricated using mould developed by rapid prototype method and bone tissue equivalent material. |
Scope of the Study |
The study deals with the Development of Indian Standard Phantoms (Knee and Skull) for in-vivo monitoring.
The following are the objectives of the study:
|
Expected Expertise | Academic / Research Institutes with experience and expertise in the development of moulds using rapid prototype methods |

Collaborative Study : Development of Automated Defect Recognition system for radiographic inspection of Castings
Please send an E-mail to: vidya@igcar.gov.in | Closing Date : 22.05.2024 |
Theme | Cast products of various complex geometries are being used in various components such as Master Slave Manipulator etc. in nuclear plants. All castings shall be 100 % radiographed to ascertain defects such as Gas holes, Shrinkage, Inclusions, Hot tear etc.,. Review of casting radiographs in comparison with ASTM std reference radiographs is quite laborious, time consuming and there is a possibility of missing flaws due to fatigue of the inspector. To overcome these issues, it is proposed to develop an Artificial Intelligence (AI) based online application to review, characterise, interpret and evalute the production casting radiographs . |
Scope of the Study |
This study deals with recognition of various flaws in casting radiographs, extracting the various features and comparing the same with ASTM reference casting radiographs for the acceptance limits ( Category & Severity of flaws)
Following activities needs to be included :
|
Expected Expertise | Academic / Research Institutes with expertise in field of Non-destructive testing, Artificial Intelligence, Image processing and development of algorithm for classification of flaws and interfacing it with a compatible hardware. Experience of executing a similar kind of work in the recent past is an added advantage. |
