Mandate
- The primary mandate of ESD is to provide adequate, high quality, reliable and uninterrupted power required for various needs of the research activities and the infrastructural requirements of the centre. To meet this Electrical Services Division designs, construct, operate, maintain and upgrade Electrical transmission and distribution system keeping in mind the system reliability & safety.
- The division is also responsible for providing state of the art intercom telecommunication services to the plant site as well as for Energy conservation in the Electrical sphere through auditing and implementing various energy conservation measures.
Achievments
- Retrofitting Electro Mechanical relays with Numerical relays in CSS, NCSS-I, PDC-I, PDC-II, PDC-III, PDC-IV, RCL SS, GSB SS and CWS SS
- Commissioning of SCADA based substation monitoring system for CSS bus section A and PDC V substations.
- Commissioning of PDC-X 6.6 kV Indoor sub-station.
- Commissioning & integration of Phase-1 Grid-tied 340 kWp PV solar system at IGCAR parking area
- Commissioning of PDC-VII 11 kV Indoor sub-station.
- Up-gradation of RCL substation DG set & AMF panel.
- Revamping of PCC panel at RCL substation
- Commissioning of Pallavaram DAE Nodal facility 11 kV Indoor sub-station.

- Implementaion of Exhaust fan control with weekly Timers for Lab/office building to conserve energy.
- For System Improvement, Numerical Relay being developed by E& IG have been connected in 11 kV panel, CSS on a trial basis.
- For System Improvement, Rear door safety logics by mechanical interlocks have been implemented in CSS (Bus section - B). This will prevent the rear door to be opened without switching Off the CB and with drawing it out-side the cubicle.
Expertise
- ESD is a centralized facility having expertise in providing uninterrupted power supply by maintaining 33 kV Central Switching Station the nodal Sub-station between two generating stations, Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS), BHAVINI & Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) and end users, i.e., all DAE facilities at Kalpakkam. It functions as a nerve centre for electrical distribution network at IGCAR, Kalpakkam. It was commissioned in the year 1977 with single 33 kV Incomer from MAPS to feed off-site power requirements of FBTR and allied labs of the then Reactor Research Centre (RRC).
- It has expertise in power transmission systems and distribution systems. All 33 kV equipment like transformers, breakers, isolators, Current & Potential transformers etc are located in an outdoor switch yard. The switch yard is well designed with various protections like underground earth mat, blue metal stones to bring down step & touch potentials, lightning screen, surge diverters etc in line with Indian and International safety standards. The RCC structures carrying all the equipment have been slightly elaborated.
